Charge for Emergency Plumbing Call Out

I thought I'd canvas the wise of WHO....I'm Having a kitchen fitted and when removing boxing round the boiler they discovered that the Fernox filter was clogged and leaking.
In addition the pipe into the boiler was also leaking which had caused damp down the wall and rotted the old cabinets so had been a while....
Anyway needed fixing urgently as was delaying the fitters so I got hold of a plumber at 3pm and he came next morning, to be fair it was so urgent and I was so glad to find someone I never discussed price which is my fault.
He was here 3 hours and drained down the system then fitted all new pipes and new fernox filter. They also cleaned the system with some chemicals then refilled it then checked all working. They did a fantastic job were clean and very friendly. All in all I couldn’t be happier.
Anyway when I got the bill I was a bit surprised at how much it was and I'm not unhappy with the job but I wondered how much you’d expect to pay seeing as I have no real idea.....I don't mind paying but I'm more interested in if they're ripping me off because I might want to use them again......

why not give them a call- say you have some more jobs for them to do potetnially, but was surprised at labour charge - see what they say.

You've been not ripped off, but I think you have been charged for the whole day.
But the plumber came along on a phone call without seeing the job first. So he cannot make further arrangements for the rest of the day as he would have been unsure how long your job would take.
That he was only there three hours means he has benefited.
With travelling and other unquantifiable stuff he wont be able to much else with his day after your job.
Unless your neighbour also called with an emergency job too..........

Northern, yes would send over a pint, IF i was going in pubs. After getting told off twice for standing up from my table with out my mask on by a very fat Barmaid, im giving the pubs a swerve!!! I was thinking "i wonder what sort of job old FATTYS going to do when all the pubs shut down"??

Try wiping knob SLOWLY across the Plumber/bill/Fernox Filter.

Plumbers (MATE fitting a new tap tomorrow)… Sparkys… Drainage engineers… odd jobbers… tilers… decorators… mechanics… all bases covered in a wide MATES network

No worries mate. I use WHO for loads of advice so its good to help each other out.
I think they way you have to look at it is you are having a kitchen fitted and so, no doubt, you are spending a small fortune anyway. So if expecting around £350 its cost you £150 on top of what you are spending. So its nothing to major.
Plus, you can now crack on and you've got all new pipes and filter plus flushed system that will serve you for years to come.

Thanks Russ - Good to know - I was expecting £350 and £400 I'd have been fine with given how badly it needed doing and I just felt it was a little over the top and slightly taking advantage...

Sorry, I was typing and didn't see your valuation.
I think that's well dear mate. The parts sounds OK albeit probably on the dearer side of things but if he has fitted a filter for £140 you have got a really good one. As I said with pipes I wasn't sure what he used so if they are copper and have valve fittings then it sounds reasonable enough.
But he has charged you £100 per hour labour. That is fucking extortionate mate.

In my last two houses we both had boiler repairs. And in my current house we developed it which included boiler work. So I do have a bit of experience here.
From what you said I would say this.
No call out fee as it was next day. 3 hours labour for a plumber should be £50 per hour max. Anyone charging over that is very expensive and having you over.
Fernox filter is anything from £70 to £110 depending on brand so lets say £100. Fernox fluid is £20 max. You say fitted all new pipes. Not sure what type but, even so, let's say £50 materials.
So I would expect a bill around £300. Any more than that I would suggest he's started to creep into the having you over area.
How much was it?

it was £510 - £200 parts (filter was £140) and the rest labour and inc VAT not cash....

If it's around 400 quid or over you've had your pants pulled down for sure. 300 or under sounds feasible.
